Atius Laraji
Pronounced: at-ee-us lah-rah-ji
Rank: Soldier

Profile:

Physical Description:

It is said that Atius inherited his sharp nose from his father and his 'pouty' mouth from his mother, but in every other respect, the young Arafellin resembles his grandfather. He stands just shy of five feet eleven inches, and is often described as a 'well-built lad' by his elders. Though his shoulders are narrower than, say, the average blacksmith's, Atius is still built solidly. His raven-black hair, like any other Arafellin's, surrounds his soft, youthful face in a myriad of intricate braids, each ending in a tiny bell. His eyes are perhaps the most startling part of his appearance -- a stark, midnight blue, as rare in Arafal as a tall man is in Cairhein.

Personality:

Atius, as a nobleman's son, is proud and arrogant. As a relatively attractive young man, he has learned to use his appearance to his advantage. He is known to have a 'silver tongue', and is also known for a streak of cruelty. He is narcissistic, and enjoys philosophy (right alongside his women and wine).

Biography:

Atius Laraji was born the second son of five children, the eldest being his sister, Mirelle. Of the five, he has only one brother, named Kirito. His two younger sisters were born within minutes of each other – twins in appearance if not in mind. As the eldest male in a noble family, it was assumed that Atius would continue his family’s proud lineage when he reached the age of majority.

In Arafel, so close to the Blight, staying alive is one of the many things that a young man must learn. Despite the web of politics that surround Arafel – as in any other nation – Atius was first trained to use weapons of steel, rather than of the mind.

A formal education, of course, came right alongside learning how to use a blade. It was Atius’ father – in a rare moment of paternal awareness – that declared his sons and daughters would know their numbers and letters as well as any other noble. It was his grandfather, Gallus – a man Atius had often wished dead – that promoted his education in politics, as well.

Atius grew up as any nobleman’s son would – filled to the brim with the idea that he was superior to the majority of the folk who surrounded him on a daily basis. Being the eldest son only imprinted his status ever more deeply, and as a result, the spoilt boy grew to be a narcissistic young man, self-righteous and with a cruel streak that no little few of his peers were aware of.

As Atius sped towards the age of majority, a number of events occurred. Firstly, he found himself in the midst of a seemingly endless stream of eligible wives – another act of his errant father. Proud, arrogant, and completely uncaring as to the results of his actions, Atius took advantage of the parade of young women that were presented to him. Before long, the offers for marriage dwindled to little more than a trickle.

It was a full year before the delegation from the Grey Tower would come to Arafel, a year in which Atius’ grandfather desperately tried to find someone, anyone willing to marry their daughter to his grandson. With the arrival of two Asha’man and two Aes Sedai, Gallus Laraji finally found a use for his grandson.

Within minutes, it was discovered that Atius, while not born with the spark of the One Power, could still be taught to manipulate saidin to his will. Of course, to Atius, it was just one more advantage, and one more thing to add to his ever-increasing list of ‘virtues’.
