Bonding

Bonding plays a big role at the Grey Tower. While the One Power is a useful tool, it is not omnipotent, and there are many circumstances where using it could create more problems than it solves. A channeler's Warder is there to be her hand and her weapon in such situations. Warders cannot be sensed, are not bound by the same laws, and generally have greater combat training and survival knowledge than channelers.

That said, there are some things all writers should know about bonding before jumping in.

The Benefits of Bonding

A Warder's bond grants him increased strength and life expectancy, a very quick rate of healing, the ability to go for long periods of time without food, water, or rest, a sense of his ward’s location and condition (both physical and emotional), shielded dreams, and the ability to sense the taint of the Dark One.

A channeler can sense if their Warder is alive, and an idea of his location and condition (both physical and emotional). Any further benefits remain shrouded in mystery (so have fun).

The knowledge of physical condition and exact location dwindles with distance; if a channeler is in Saldaea and the Warder in Tear, they would only know the general direction the other is in, and that they are far away.

The Effects of a Bondmate's Death

A bonded Warder will know the time and manner of his ward’s death, should that happen, and experience overwhelming grief as a result. It is extremely rare for a Warder to survive his bondmate’s death.

A bonded channeler will know the time and manner of her Warder’s death, should that happen, and experience overwhelming grief. Channelers are able to overcome this grief much more easily than Warders.

How to Get a Bondmate

The only real restrictions on bonding are as follows:

  • All involved players must consent to the bond beforehand.
  • If a learning rank bonds or is bonded by someone, the writer(s) must be prepared to face in character consequences.
  • Characters at the Grey Tower are welcome to bond PCs, PSCs, or NPCs.

Regardless of what type of character they choose to bond, the initial relationship and reasoning for the bond should be written out prior to declaring a bond.

Once that has been done, send us an email with the names of the characters who have been bonded. You may then post an announcement in the Main Message Board if you like, or simply go about your way.

How many Warders can a character have?

There are no OOC restrictions on who can bond who, or how many times. In Character rules are such that:

  • Warders and all Ajahs but Red and Green may bond only once.
  • The Red and Green Ajahs may bond as many or as few as they wish.
  • The Learning Ranks may not bond.

Violation of these traditions will not result in any consequences for the writer, but the character may be given penance or deal with social pressure for their uncouth choices.

Reversing a Bond

If both involved writers are still active, a bond can be reversed by simply roleplaying that it was released or passed to another. The bond will also break if one of the parties dies.

If one of the bonded pair is no longer active on the site the one who remains may end the bond in whatever way they see fit, although administration encourages writers to avoid ‘summary death’ if at all possible, as players come and go quite frequently.

Forcebonding

It is possible for a character to be bonded against their will if both of the writers involved in the bond give OOC permission for it to happen. Be aware that force bonding is considered to be one of the worst crimes a channeler can commit, and therefore anyone contemplating this course of action should weigh their options very carefully beforehand.

Bonding and the Black Ajah

If a channeler joins the Black Ajah his or her bondmate(s) would know immediately, but wouldn’t know exactly what the issue was. The new Black sister will do one of three things at that point: a) hope the Warder is also a Darkfriend, b) hide her affiliation somehow, or c) arrange for an ‘accident.’ (Source)
