The sun was breaking through the over-cast of clouds and shade just as Nykkolaia walked into the room. Multi-colored light dappled the air and the Novice was briefly caught in the spell. For that instant, more emotion showed in her marred features than anyone would have yet seen. Blue eyes widening, she stared up at the crystal dome. So beautiful, and unlike the darkened ceilings of basements.

Perhaps she would have stood there forever, if a Soldier who was busier reading than looking where he was going hadn't of bumped into her.

He had been walking quickly enough to provide some force behind the collision, and she had been distracted enough to have little foothold. Nykk was knocked forward and landed on her hands and knees. Pain lanced through her right hand and she inhaled sharply, but didn't cry out. She pushed herself quickly to her feet and with downcast eyes, uttering swift apologies for being in the way.

There was an apology from the Solider as well, but she didn't hear it as she quickly moved along. Hurrying, she worked her way to the back of the group gathering for the class and waited.

Having pulled deep inside herself, it wasn't until the lesson began that she was able to emerge. Nykkolaia crawled from her own darkness to listen to the Accepted begin the lesson, discussing the weather, the Atha'an Miere, and the way that such things could be controlled by one who was trained to do so. She recalled Accepted Thimelle mentioning this possibility during their One Power lesson.

When the direction had been given, Nykk took a deep breath. Ultimately, she was still new to the Tower and so had only done this a few times in her classes since that initial lesson... but under her teacher's instructions, she had done well enough at it. And now with another firmly given directive, embracing Saidar took but a few moments.

She had heard that it was not so easy for others, but perhaps they just didn't know how to follow orders well.

With the One Power running through her and the remembrance of what life was like, Nykk looked at the feather that she had been given. Lift the feather from the ground, she told herself and then returned to her previous lessons. She remembered how to call upon Air, and so she did so; a small thread befitting the feather to be lifted, and also befitted what she was able to do.

The feather didn't lift on her first attempt, and a new thread appeared... a thread of fear that slipped through her and almost shook her hold on the moment, fearing punishment for being unable to do the task at hand. She forced herself past it and tried again. This time, she was able to bring the feather off the ground and she felt relief. It remained like that for several moments before she let it down with a small sigh of said feeling.

Now... the candle...

She didn't like looking at the flame, and felt a familiar burning in her scars that was only made worse by the quiet enhancement of Saidar within. And yet, she almost liked the pain. She took the thin tendril of Air once again and focused on bringing it to the flame. A flame she suddenly wrestled with a strong urge to snuff out completely, but managed to not.

The thread ineffectively pushed at the flame for several moments. Nykkolaia frowned, but was able to keep trying. It shifted so much that it nearly extinguished, but it remained and flickered and twitched in a manner that was not nearly so graceful as to say it 'danced' but it at least moved. And once it had followed Nykkolaia's commands for the moment, she finally got the wish she didn't acknowledge and put it out.
