Father has brought before the Hall a proposal to remove the Talent Tracking Objects from the Talents Listing.
His argument for this is:
Quote:As already stated, my proposal involves revoking the Talent status of "Tracking Objects", as it is undeserving of such, and relegating it to the Weaves section.
As for proof, it has unfortunately been used only twice to my knowledge in the series, but at both times it's usage seemed to indicate that is was simply a weave, and there was no level of skill involved.
In Eye of the World, Moiraine provided the silver coins to the three Ta'veren, and was henceforth able to locate them wherever they went in the world. (Until they gave them up of course, the bloody fools). Of course, this was early in the series, and so RJ had yet to work out all the mechanics of the One Power, but he made no mention of Moiraine having any particular skill. She merely did something to the coins, from which point she could find the boys.
The only other time the weaves was used was in Chapter 16 of Knife of Dreams: "The New Follower". It's right at the end if you want to look in your own copy if you have one. (Top of page 362 in the American Hardback) Elayne weaves what she calls a Finder onto a man's clothing. She specifically calls it a weave, and says it is similar to the Warder Bond, but far less complex. The Weave would fade from his normal clothing, but it would stay with his metal belt buckle forever. Again, no mention of any level of skill is made. It is simply something she weaves.
Fortunately this isn't a commonly claimed Talent here at the Grey Tower. There wouldn't even be any conflict if the Hall were to agree with my proposal, as no one has the Talent at this time. If someone were to return who had the Talent from a previous time at the Tower, we could refund their Talent Points for them to reassign as they see fit.
The description of the the Tracking Objects Talent as defined by the GT is:
Quote:Tracking Objects:A minor Talent: ability to place a weave on an object such as a coin, and be able to locate its owner when it is nearby and in his/her possession.
Feedback from the Council is valued and will be presented before the Hall during the discussion. What do you think?
