Jerid blinked, for the first time in months seeing those hands flash. It took him a second to decipher the patterns she used. This was Lysira, lying beneath him, as real and as breathing as any flesh and blood person.

But it could not be. She had died when they had hunted down a Dreadlord. Worse. He had felt it, sharper than the loss of any other bond he had ever suffered through. And that same Dreadlord had escaped, had slain his young son not two hours later.

“Who am I,” he whispered in disbelief. “I'm Jerid Walker. You...you should be nothing but the body I buried along with our—my son.” He fumbled over his words, unsure of how to grasp the situation.

“I felt the bond snap, and I know you're not real. Otherwise, I would have felt it.” But there was no denying the body underneath his belonged to his wife, and that those dark and wide, calm eyes staring at him were hers as well.

Only, there was something subtly different. Just a bit more open, perhaps, and less conservative in her emotions.

His mind went back to the Portal Stone, his thoughts reeling over every note he could as quickly as possible. And then he swore violently. “Blood and ashes, I'm going to skin Zae. Similar flows are not the same exact flows...”

Still, he had his doubts and abruptly he leaned down and pressed his lips against Lysira's, kissing her deeply. It lasted only a second...and searing and different enough to jolt Jerid's mind

It was only then that the gravity of the situation set in. “You're not my wife,” he whispered, almost choking the words out. “I'm Jerid, just not your Jerid.”
