Lesson 1: Introduction to Philosophy
Pasmael played nervously with his hair...it was his first class and he was pretty nervous.
He took a quick look at the room he had especially prepared for this class., the walls were white..and tapestries were hanging on them ; tapestries of fields and meadows. He wanted to make an aura of calm ..because for reflexion and personal discovery calm was needed.
The desks were arranged in a semi-circle facing the front of the class.
Pasmael took a deep breath ...he had been very reluctant at beginning teaching a class, he was too shy for the job ..however, he just couldn't stand the fact that there wasn't any philosophy class at the tower
As the students began to enter Pasmael wrote on the board .
?Lesson 1 : Introduction to philosophy
What is philosophy ? What can be called ?truth??What is love? How can we say that something is beautifully? What is a human being?
After writing those questions Pasmael turned for seeing the students...he wasn't surprised to see only a handful of faces, most people believed that philosophy was useless...and for those handful who understood the power and importance of philosophy ; they didn't always accept it.
He took a deep breath
?Welcome to this Philosophy class ,? he began. ?Today we will talk about philosophy in a general way, and on the next classes we will talk about different ramifications of it?
?First of all ...can someone tell me what is ?philosophy??
Pasmael saw a couple of hands being raised ? Yes? , he said, pointing to a young novice.
?Philosophy is quest of knowledge? she said in an hesitant tone ?it?s trying to know everything?
?Right, but at the same time wrong. Philosophy means literally ?Love of wisdom?. As you said, it?s a quest for knowledge, but not a quest of ?statistic? knowledge, such as history and geography. But it?s the quest for truth.
What?s the difference? In philosophy we never take anything for granted, we doubt of everything we can. For some people a philosopher is first defined by his spirit of doubt...they have to doubt everything for trying to reach their quest of true.?
As he was talking, his voice was full of emotion..emotion he usually never showed.
?Each of the branch of philosophy we will study deals with doubts and question. Questions about what is to be alive Questions about humanity itself.
In philosophy , we divide notions in two big groups. Abstract and concrete. We talk about concrete when we speak about things that our ?senses? , such as smell, hearing or touch, can pick. And we talk about abstract we there is no ?physical? proof of their existence. But be careful, abstract doesn't mean that it doesn't exist. For example, we can't smell or touch love, but it does exist.
He smiled as he saw some puzzled faces.
?Our next class we will study logic, for this purpose the class will be taking place at the upper floor of the tower, at three hours after low ? He could hear some people talking ? You will still have chore time...so don't think this is a way to avoid it?
He then turned to the board? You see I have wrote questions about things everyone take for granted, such as love or beauty. As i told you , philosophy is to question those things.
For the assignment i want that everyone think on 3 questions about notions or ideas you took for granted, and then explain them to me, also you will tell me if they are concrete or abstract . You will be coming here one after one to tell me. So, begin?
Lesson 2: Logic
Pasmael waited on the place that had been assigned for this class, It was a little early , he just hoped that everyone will find their way to this place of the Tower, a corridor in one of the top level of the tower.
He took a look at the place in which the class will take place , as most of the towers upper room, windows were of power wrought glass, allowing to see in a more clearer way.
Pasmael looked at the sky, a source of inspiration for many artist and philosophers.
Pasmael could heard some footsteps coming..as the firsts students began to arrive he told them to sit on the ground .
When all the students were sited he began.
? For many people, and many philosophers logic is the most important tool for reaching truth in philosophy. But, what is logic exactly?
Many people use the word ?logic? as a synonym for common sense or the right answer.
As it happens with many philosophical notions..they are more complex than what people believe.
Logic is based on a very specific kind of reasoning. This way of reasoning establish that on the same conditions , the same actions brings the same consequences. This is very useful on many studies ..for example, in arithmetic or physics logic is the mainly tool.
Now...in real life this method of reasoning is very usefully....
A soldier hand raised immediately ?Sorry for interrupting sir? he said in a small and nervous voice ? but..how is exactly this reasoning a very important tool on arithmetic and physics...??
Pasmael smiled...this soldier made him remember his old days as a new member of the tower..afraid of everything, but eager to learn.
? In physics for example, we search to create general rules about the physical word...rules about why when we throw something, it falls to earth and it does not float around, rules about why the water boil....we search for the objective truth behind everything.
In order to be able to do so, we need to establish that if we do always the same things, under the same conditions, we will have the same results..because if it is not , then, there are no rules that are possible?
? Now...how using this way of reasoning allows us to discover more about the world itself??
He took an unlit candle and with a simple weave of fire light it. ?Now , for those that can't see i just used Fire to light this candle..now i will use the same candle..but this time i will change something ? as he said that , he used a weave of air to make a bubble of air on the flame...trapping the air in a little space around the fire. ? I just made a little bubble of air...no air is coming in or out ...now everyone watch ? after a little while the fire extinguished alone.
Pasmael smiled ?Now, using the way of reasoning i told you is the basic for logic...if we had been on the same conditions than when there was the flame, we should had the same flame .
What changed this time? There was no air circulation. What general rule can we made based on this??
A Dedicated raised his hand ? That for making fire we need something that is on the air? he said on an hesitant tone.
?Exactly. Even if that reasoning prove being correct when talking about natural rule we can't say that is 100 percent right.
When we are talking about people we don't have the same ability to predict the outcome .
That?s because humans have free will..the ability to choose what they want..even if it?s ?wrong or right?..that?s why most philosophers consider humanity as illogical?
Pasmael smiled at the bewilderment of some of his students.
?Now, for this class assignment I want that everyone think in an example of how logic can be used to solve problems in real life..it can be something as trivial as the weather...or complicated...also i want an example of how logic is useless when dealing with human behavior .
Each one of you will take turns about and will talk personally with me..oo, yes, the next class wild take place at the gardens..each one of you will bring something personal that they consider important.
Now...begin your assignment please ?
Lesson 3: Aesthetics
Class 3
It was almost the hour, and Pasmael waited in a secluded spot of the gardens, where the students were supposed to come.
He watched the sky, it was a sunny day, perfect for the Aesthetics class, and for what he was planning to do.
As the students began to arrive he told them to sit on the grass; when everyone was silted he began to talk.
??He who attempts to explain beauty explains nothing.?? . This is a very old saying, and even if it?s against this saying, what Aesthetics do is that..the study of beauty.
Most people just call something beautiful or ugly without even thinking the ?Why??..the doubt that each philosopher must have.
Some people say that the idea of beauty is something personal..thus making impossible the creation of general rules. However aesthetics isn't about creating general rules; Those that study aesthetics seek to understand why some things arouse positive reactions, whereas others arouse more negative feelings.
Now, What is art?? Simply stated, art is a human effort to imitate, supplement, alter, or counteract the work of nature. It is also the conscious creation or arrangement of sounds, colors, forms, movements, or other elements in a manner that affects the sense of beauty.
Now that you know what art is, ?What is beauty?? Beauty is the value that gives pleasure to the mind or senses and the qualities that is most effective, gratifying, or telling.?
For example..some philosophers believe than beauty comes from ?Order?, when we see in paintings straight lines, or geometrical figures. However, most philosophers agrees on the beauty of ?chaos?, and how disorder is viewed as beautiful in many cases.?
Pasmael could see that many faces looked confused so he asked ? Is there any question?
A dedicated raised her hand ? I don't understand how chaos can be viewed as beautiful?
Pasmael smiled in an encouraging way, it was good....asking question is the only way to get real knowledge.
?For example ..take a painting of a forest..where is the order in the forest? Where is the order on the way how birds fly??
He clapped his hand ? I hope that everyone brought the personal thing that you valued . For today?s assignment you will stand in front of the class and present what you value the most. Tell us why you treasure it and what it means to you. Also be sure to include what beauty lies in or around it.
Also remember that there aren't any right or wrong answers. Okay..you begin? he said, pointing anyone at random.
Lesson 4: Cosmology
Class 4
Pasmael was walking nervously , today they were going to study one of the most complicated area of philosophy, he just hoped being able to explain it correctly.
As the students began to enter he told them to sit; when everyone was sited Pasmael began.
?Today we will deal with Cosmology, one of the most complicated area of philosophy , so i want everyone to pay attention please?
He took a deep breath ?Cosmology study the world itself. It involves both the study of the physical world, as well as its origins. Have you ever wondered where the world came from? How the wheel came to be? The light and the dark??
He smiled as he saw the wonderment of some of his student.
? This subject can create some ethical problem, and I certainly don't recommend talking about the existence of the Creator with a whitecloak? He said, trying to make a joke...most people were a little touchy when talking about certain things on cosmology.
?How did the Wheel come to be? And why did it come to be? When did time begin and what was there before time? How did the One Power and the Pattern come to be??
Pasmael remained silent a moment..not knowing if adding or not the last question, finally ? Is there really a creator??
Pasmael remained in silence another moment..seeing more amazement from the students.
?The attempt to prove the existence of a creator with the existence of the universe, takes in the assumption that a creator has to create ?something? out of ?nothing. That?s one of many arguments in Cosmology? Realizing that he was probably beginning to confuse them more he decided to explain it a little. ?It means that the Creator had to create everything around us out of nothing. Can we say that this was possible? If there was nothing...what is the creator then?
And what about the idea of ending. Everything end in a moment or another...so will the world end in a moment of other? And I'm not talking about what is usually known as good or evil..I'm talking about the world itself..everything as we know..as it had an beginning it must have an ending?
Today I will not say that there is a right or wrong answer, because Cosmology isn't based on facts, Cosmology is based in belief and how ready are we to accept some questions on our life.
For today assignment each one will think on an answer about on of the questions i made at the beginning of the class , i don't want answer such as the creator exist because if there wasn't a creator the dark one would have won..use logic and reason in everything.
Each one of you will come in order and says his answer to me, i will make a ward of silence so the others won't hear, and remember, there is no wrong or right answer here.
OOC: At least 200 words please
Lesson 5: Final Test
Lesson 5 Test
Pasmael waited nervously as the students began to sit on the chairs, today was the final exam.
He took a long look at the class, he will certainly miss teaching to this class..it had been certainly a very interesting experience, he had never thought he will finish enjoying teaching.
He took a deep breath, the last one
?Ok Class, everyone had done a very good job until now, here we are at the last part of this class, the final exam.
I hope that everyone studied and I'm sure everyone will make a good job.
On the sheets that are on your table there are 4 questions, each one concerning one of the 4 subjects we had studied..you can pick 2 of them and answer , I want each answer of at least 120 words. Now, begin?
Question 1 : What is philosophy ? Why do you think philosophy is useful to humanity?
Question 2 What is exactly logic? Why it is useful and what are his limits?
Question 3 Why something can be called beautiful?
Question 4 Chose on of the following questions
Does the creator and the Dark one exist?
What is the Power?
What is the Pattern?
