Dedicated Vashan walked into the classroom with a bright smile on his face. It was a beautiful morning and the weather was just splendid. He was eager to start his class as this would be his first official lesson after being raised to Dedicated. Walking into the quiet classroom, he nervously made his way to the front of the classroom and made sure everything he needed was there. There wasn’t much he needed in fact, but he double checked just in case.
He wasn’t that early, but it gave Vashan a period of time to rethink that he would say to the eager Soldiers and Novices who wanted to know more about the Yellow Ajah. He thought about what he would say, and how to answer a few of the common questions they would ask about. He didn’t know all there is to know about the Yellow Ajah, but he knew how to get around questions if some Soldiers or Novices decided to be smart with him.
His train of thought was interrupted by the opening of the classroom doors. He waited calmly, steadying himself as the students filed into the classroom in ones or pairs, sometimes even a whole group trying to come through at the same time. Light, there’s a lot of Novices! There’s quiet a number of Soldiers too. Not a bad turn out. He waited and watched as the students seated themselves at tables before raising a hand, requesting silence. He nodded to himself slightly, seeing some Soldiers and Novices, already had parchments at the ready. The sight reminded him of himself when he attended the Yellow Ajah class in what seemed like a very long time ago. When all the students had quieted down, he began to speak.
“Welcome to the Ajah Class, I am Dedicated Vashan Sacain and I will brief you on some of the basics of the Yellow Ajah. Many of you here will know, that the Yellow Ajah is also known as the Healing Ajah because those in the Yellow Ajah dedicate themselves to Healing the injuries of others and to help further the wonders of medicine.
Healing itself is not just restricted to using the One Power, it can also include the use of herbs and ointments to further the result of the healing process. Healing is considered a Talent because it doesn’t matter too much about your One Power strength, even if it might help a little in some situations. It also needs skill in order to effectively use Healing.
Alright, back to the Yellow Ajah itself then. Almost all Aes Sedai and Asha’man in the Yellow Ajah are talented in Healing, varying from one degree to another in skill and knowledge. Those who show exceptional skill in Healing with the One Power, often find themselves in the Yellow Ajah one way or another by their own free will once they are raised to the shawl or the cord.
The Grey Tower, in the past had two M’Hael who were raised from the Yellow Ajah. They are fairly well known if you know your Tower history. Kaihan Masawi and Keyeren Selan both held the position of M’Hael for quite a number of years. For those who are interested.” Vashan added as an after thought. It wasn’t right to brag about your own Ajah of aspiration too much, but it just couldn’t be helped.
Vashan stopped to wet his lips, there was a glass of water on the table in front of him, but he did not reach for it. “I think I should leave my brief description of the Yellow Ajah here at this point. I’ll let you guys come up with more questions to ask me. Anyone can now raise their hand to ask me questions about the Yellow Ajah. I welcome all queries, be they long or short. Although if you do have a long question that needed to be answered, I am available after this class is finished, or if you prefer, you can approach any Aes Sedai or Asha’man of the Yellow Ajah to ask your question. But be warned, many Aes Sedai or Asha’man are quite busy with research or in the infirmary working, so many might not be available to freely answer questions.
So then, the questions can now start.” Vashan nodded to all the students in the classroom.
OOC: Hey guys! Thanks for taking the Ajah Class, and you’re now up to the Yellow Ajah section. Here is what I want from you. ;)
I am not after quantity, I am after quality. Ask me creative questions about the Yellow Ajah and Healing. ^_^ I left you a lot of room to ask questions. Have your post as long or short as you like, but I’d rather like to have your post to be at least 2 paragraphs long, each paragraph with 4 sentences.
Enjoy! If you have any questions, you can email me at archangel_alden@hotmail.com, if you’d like to flag the subject with something like “Yellow Lesson Question” or something to help make it stand out, that’d be great. But you don’t have to. Hehehe.
Grey Lesson
Talathiri entered the classroom just as the bells began to ring High. Only two or three students had yet arrived, although the footsteps in the hallway betokened more to come. Walking down the aisle to the front, Tala set her notes on the table and turned to face the room. Standing perfectly still and wearing an absent expression, she might have been thinking about anything as she waited for the remainder of the class to make an appearance.
In actual fact, Talathiri was reminding herself of the class material, to be sure she would not forget anything. The students who made their way into the room and seated themselves ranged from Dedicated and Accepted her own age down to novices Tala was sure she had seen only once or twice in passing, and there was even an occasional trainee from the Warder Yards among those who waited for her to begin. As the room fell silent, with the last student slipping quietly into a chair at the back, Tala took a step forward and began to speak. Although her notes were in front of her, she kept her attention on the class.
‘Good morning, everyone. As you know, the subject of today’s lesson will be
the Gray Ajah – its place in the Tower, and its reason for being, although possibly not in that order.’ She smiled slightly, watching the class to see who responded, and continued. ‘My name is Talathiri, for those of you I have not met, and I am one of the Accepted aspiring to the Gray. This class will take the form of a brief lecture and then a discussion and several questions at the end.
‘Although it is currently one of the smallest Ajahs in the Grey Tower, the Gray Ajah plays a very important role in the Tower’s affairs and even in the world at large. Most of you have probably heard the Gray Ajah associated with mediation and negotiation and, indeed, it is. Members of the Gray are very skilled in those arts, employing them for the good of the Tower and to promote peace in the world, but there is more to the Ajah than diplomacy - vital though that is. The essence of the Gray Ajah is balance – the balance between nations, between factions, between individuals, and within an individual’s life.’ Talathiri paused for emphasis, casting her eyes around the room, and set her notes back on the table beside her.
‘If that point of view is taken, it is easy to see why sisters and brothers of the Gray find themselves involved in quite a variety of different situations. It is not difficult, of course, to see how the Ajah works for balance between nations who are at war, or factions who disagree; this, naturally, is where diplomacy in its traditional sense is most obviously at work. It should be remembered, though, that the goal is indeed balance – it is not the role of the Gray to work on behalf of one side or the other, except of course that their loyalties lie with the Grey Tower, but to strive for peace and goodwill between nations. Members of the Gray may travel long distances to aid in the drawing up of treaties or the settling of a civil war, and often into dangerous situations. This may sound very exciting, but in truth, the second most important attribute of a Gray is patience – patience enough to be able to go over the same ground with obstinate people again and again, and patience to read law and history almost endlessly. The most important attribute is something for you to think about yourselves as the lesson continues.’ Stepping around in front of the table, Tala allowed the class a moment to consider the idea before going on.
‘The concept of balance, however, can also be applied to the individual. There are times when quarrels between individuals can damage the Tower as a whole, and those situations may be seen as an extension of the need for diplomatic skills. There are other situations where quarreling is not necessarily involved, however, but where a lack of balance itself may harm the Grey Tower. One example of this would perhaps be if we found ourselves with a large difference in the proportion of men to women, or women to men, in the Tower. While this does not involve a quarrel, and is not intrinsically dangerous, there would be ways in which this would be to the Tower’s detriment. Now, obviously, the Hall as a whole would handle that situation; however, this is the kind of area in which the Gray Ajah takes an interest. You may find it useful to consider other circumstances in which this might be the case, especially if you have an interest in studies with the Gray Ajah.’ And of course I’m not hinting...not at all… Tala thought wryly, glancing around the classroom and noting the different levels of attention with some amusement. After a moment, she continued,
‘Finally, the concept of balance may be applied within an individual’s life. An Accepted who spends all her time training with a dagger will be ill-prepared to critique the wording of a treaty, and of course the converse is also true. For the trainees, this also applies to those Warders who bond into the Gray Ajah; they will be infinitely more helpful to their bondmate if they possess a variety of skills and interests as well as their prowess with their weapons of choice. Members of the Gray Ajah, and their Warders, strive to lead lives that are balanced and well-rounded, and so to equip themselves to bring balance – and therefore peace – to the world around them.’
Spreading her hands as she reached the conclusion, Talathiri paused for a moment to let the pens catch up with her words. When it seemed as though everyone had finished taking notes, she moved back to the centre of the room and said,
‘We will now open the class for questions and for some discussion. I have some questions for you, and you are welcome to ask me any that you have as well. Although more may follow, we will begin with the following question, which we touched on earlier: What, in your opinion, is the most important attribute in a sister or brother of the Gray Ajah?’
Hands began rising around the classroom, and Talathiri motioned for one of the students to stand and answer.
Brown Lesson
Noel had to really concentrate to keep her Aes Sedai calm, she enjoyed discussions and conversations but she wasn’t very comfortable speaking in front of such a large group of people. It seemed at least half of the novice and soldier population had turned out for the class…
She would have rather another teach this class, but there were so few brown aspirants these days. The few others were already teaching several classes, so she was sort of obliged to take it. She hoped she could teach it well enough to, well, influence a few to join the Brown. It just seemed that so few young people saw the importance of knowledge, and leaned toward a more romantic or adventurous ajah.
“Good afternoon, class. I am an Accepted aspiring to the Brown Ajah, and will be telling you a little about it. After the lecture, I will expect some good questions from you all, so pay attention, as I will not appreciate questions over things I thoroughly explained.
“The Brown Ajah if dedicated to the finding and preserving of knowledge. It’s most known purpose is in keeping the Grey Tower’s Library, as I’m sure you have all seen Brown members when borrowing a book. There you can find information about the Breaking or the Sea Folk, even written instruction on the many Talents and weapons. Not only are Browns responsible for keeping the books in Library, they write many of their own as well.
“Many Brown members choose a certain area of study to which they devote most of their time and study. My personal interest is in dreaming and tel’aran’rhoid, the study of which I have already begun. For clear reasons, Browns do not generally travel as much as, say, Blue or Grey members. However, especially Browns who are interested in cultures or history find that travel is necessary for their study.”
She had in fact spent much time in tel’aran’rhoid, and she looked forward to its study when she became an Aes Sedai. For her, it was more than just an interesting thing to do or a way to look at places without going to them. There was so much that wasn’t known about it.
“Browns are known for ink stains and absent mindedness, something I cannot honestly deny. But much of this is a result of their intense devotion to the search and collection of knowledge, and its passing on to others in many cases. Being a Brown is about having not only an interest but a passion for knowledge. Not only studying, but questioning is a most important aspect to gaining knowledge.
"As I said earlier, most browns choose an area to focus in, a particular subject or topic that they research. If you were to become a Brown, what do you think your area of focus would be? Why would you choose it? How would you use it to help other people, and what sort of people would you be trying to help with your knowledge? And please, feel free to ask any questions you may have."
By the end of the lecture, Noel was feeling much more comfortable with the idea of speaking. Maybe she had only felt nervous because she had never really done it before.

Indigo Lesson
Aljen walked into the room a bit late; not more than two or three minutes, but late all the same. The class was already seated, and he gave them a warm smile as he nervously took the podium.
Though the majority of the class were of course novices and soldiers of the beginning ranks, there were also the hand full of Dedicated and Accepted that were not quite sure on their Ajah of Aspiration. This was not the case for Aljen; he had only been at the tower a few weeks before he was sucked into the ranks aspiring to join the Indigo Ajah, but teaching the members of the middle ranks still made him nervous.
After placing a small satchel on the pulpit before him, he grasped its sides to keep is hands from fidgeting nervously. Then taking a confident tone and almost stern look he addressed the class.
“Good day class. I am Dedicated Aljen Pori, and I will be instructing you on what the Indigo Ajah is.”
Immediately an eager young novice’s hand shot into the air. Addressing the novice as well as the rest of the class Aljen spoke again, “I’m sure you all have several questions, many of which may be answered in the lecture, and if you please I will take you questions after I’m finished with my presentation.”
“The Indigo Ajah was founded for the study of Talents of the One Power and also of Abilities like Pattern Reading, and the ability to communicate with wolves called Wolfkin; these are not connected to the One Power at all.”
“One of the things that interests me the most is the study of ter’angreal,” he said as he opened the satchel, a smile on his face. First he held up what would appear to be a plain river rock. “This ter’angreal is one that I made using a rediscovered technique from the Age of Legends. It will make the holder invisible if a man channels a flow of spirit into it.” Seizing saidin he demonstrated how it worked, and vanished temporarily from the view of the class.
After reappearing he continued the lesson by taking out another ter’angreal and gave a brief shudder before setting it down. The object was a small crystal ball with the image of a blood red wolf’s head somehow captured within it, and the impressions he received from his affinity were not pleasant especially to one who had been raised Tuatha’an.
“This ter’angreal will allow the user to sense what if any violence has taken place in an area when all five powers are channeled into it.”
“I’m going to pass around these two objects so that you may each handle a ter’angreal. Mind you the doors have been warded and none of you will leave
until I have those back in my possession.” He had heard stories from the previous instructors, about how some of the ter’angreal shown in this class had vanished under the teacher’s nose.
“One other ter’angreal you may be familiar with is,” he said while the ter’angreal was passed around the class, “The water fall in the gardens that seems to produce water out of nowhere. The waterfall itself is composed of smooth stone and moss and is fused with the Gardens wall. The weave that transports the water is a combination of saidin and saidar<.”
“Now for your assignment today, I would like you to answer a few questions for me. First, I want you to tell me of three different talents, and what each one means. Next I would like you to tell me something you find interesting about the Indigo Ajah, and finally in what way is the Indigo Ajah different form the Brown Ajah. If you have any questions feel free to ask them after you have given your answers,” Aljen finished.
OOC: Please keep your answers In Character. Also remember to use nice big paragraphs and lots of details. Anything less will be rejected and you’ll have to try again.
Thanks,
Aljen Pori
White Lesson
Sydias made his way into the classroom that had been set aside for the Ajah Class. He now sported a new, shiny Sword Pin on his collar. He fidgeted and picked at his collar as he had done as a Soldier. It seemed so long ago that he had broken free of that habit, and yet here he was doing it again. The weight of the Pin and what it meant both to him and to the Tower left him nervous. His thoughts trailed back to his recent trip through the arches, and he had to struggle to regain his composure.
Slowly students started to sift into the room. The light of the chamber played tricks upon his eyes as he studied each face. Would Novice A slay him in his sleep if it furthered her agenda? Would Ji’alantin B be a trustworthy and potential Bondmate? Would Soldier X ask him for advice on a personal matter? Such things bothered him when he was fresh meat at the Tower, when he didn’t believe he was a channeler. Back when Aes Sedai were a mystery and Asha’man were abominations. After the test he felt the same way again.
And here they expected him to teach a lesson on the White Ajah just because he was studying philosophy and aspiring to that Ajah? What irony this logic presented! Cold, sapphire blue eyes weighed each person for the worth of their soul based on a hollow first impression.
Sydias approached the board and began to write upon it with a small chunk of chalk. “The Ajah Class White Lesson with Dedicated Sydias Caspian as Instructor.”
He glanced back at his pupils. A lovely group this is.
“Welcome to the White Ajah Lesson. I am Sydias Caspian, Dedicated aspiring White, as the board proclaims. I will give a lecture providing a very rough overview of the Logic Ajah and then provide a question answer session at the end, as well as a small exorcise where I will ask you a philosophical question at random per student and expect a well-thought answer. The answer doesn’t need to be a full-length oratory or a wordy essay. Even a simple one or two sentence answer will suffice so long as it involved a bit of thought to it.” He eyes the class carefully, watching as several faces drain of colour when they realized they have to think in this lesson.
Sydias dragged the lump of chalk across his board again, writing Philosophy: clearly enough that all could see.
“What is philosophy? An exact definition would be Identification, evaluation, and critical analysis of the categories by which we live and think. This is of course the simplest definition, but it does not do my Ajah of Aspiration justice. As a member or aspirant to the White Ajah, individuals use logic and reasoning to draw conclusions. We hope that our studies of logic, reasoning, and philosophy will aid us in defeating the Shadow as we work side by side with our sister Ajahs. A green that is concerned with a battle plan that has been troubling many members of the Ajah may use logic and reasoning to better her plans. A Blue may debate the morale philosophy of a topic to determine if a certain response is just. In fact, I believe that Serrah Sedai of the Blue is teaching just such a class. An Indigo that is testing new theories about the One Power would need to first reason out all possibilities, and then must determine whether or not they found their tests useful in a report. Oft times this will turn into a poll that collects data from the members of other Ajahs that the tests were done upon. Each of these may be philosophically debated as well, to further the understanding. Whether you plan to join the Whites or not, I assure you that a generalized understanding of Philosophy will further your advancement no matter what path you choose.”
“Within the realm of Philosophy we separate everything into smaller areas of specialization, or what we call concentrations. Today, I will tell you about these concentrations.” Sydias went back to the board and wrote “Aesthetics” on the board. He turned back to his pupils, some of them more alert now that they understood he was not just trying to recruit member to his Ajah, but give them all a better understanding of it first. After all, as he was not a fully Raised member of the Ajah, being subtle was far more within his capabilities.
“Aesthetics is the study and appreciation of Beauty. In this concentration, one might find many who study art, nature, science, music, or anything where one might perceive something as beautiful. But what is beauty, and what, or who, may determine these factors? How can one thing be beautiful to one person and hideous or worthless to another? Can beauty also deal with emotions, characteristics, etc? Ajah members who follow this path search for the reasoning behind beauty, why such beauty is needed, and how beauty can effect morale or cause a standstill.” Sydias eyed the members of the class who knew that their looks could stop other trainees of either gender, getting heads to turn while walking down the halls. He had seen just as many ‘handsome’ Soldiers and ‘sweaty’ WiTs stop a Novice in her tracks as he had seen ‘Little miss Novice with perfect hair’ stop many a trainee herself. He himself had had his share of each, no matter how ‘plain’ he believed himself to be.
Sydias continued to write on the chalk board for each of the other branches he listed. “Next we have Cosmology. Those interested in the Indigo, now would be a good time to pay attention, as this is a field of philosophy you may consider brushing up on or befriending a White for. Cosmology is the study of the universe and how it affects those within it. However, this branch also deals the closest with studying the One Power. Indigoes study how the Power works, but this branch within our Ajah studies WHY it works. What effect does it have on the mental well-being of the Tower? What effect does it have on the social well being of the entire world? These questions, and many others, must be answered by those who have chosen the path of Cosmology.
“Next I would like to discuss Ethics, the field dealing with morality and justice. What is morality? What decisions make things just or proper? What limitations should be placed upon our race and upon society to prevent us from doing harm to others or ourselves? Is there such a thing as ‘Good’ and ‘Evil?’ I would hope that any curious about the Blues or the Yellows pay closest attention to this branch, as I am not only speaking about justice for our Blues, but also about ethical bedside manner and procedures for Yellows. For instance, is it ethical to quarantine people who have a plague? Or will the attempts to contain the disease only guarantee that it will spread more rapidly within that area? If Healing can not stop it, do you give up or continue to aide where you can? Aide would be the ethical choice, unless the person requests that the aide end. If something is so strong that normal herbs do not help stop it, when do you start Healing? What if that individual does not want to be Healed? When do you agree and when is it ok to do so anyways? Is it ever ethical?
“Axiology is the study of value. Grey Aspirants will benefit the most here. What determines value? Not just monetary, though that can be included, but what decides moral value? What determines the value of life, the value of peace? When is war more valuable than peace? Many of you may believe that war is never more valuable than peace, but it is considered a natural population check. Believe it or not, each living thing on this planet must be kept in check to maintain the food sources of each other life force. As we are at the top of these chains of food source, we keep ourselves in check. The three basic checks are Starvation (Famine), Disease (Pestilence) and War (Strife). All of these lead to death, but in the long run it helps maintain life. War is needed just as much as famine and disease.” Sydias himself had been sick with the Red Plague during the recent Seanchan Siege, and he had managed to survive on very little food in the basements of the Tower. In one year of his life he had managed to live through all three major population checks. His luck was running out. “As stated, this gives war a value of ‘X’ which must be studied and compared to the value of life, ‘Y’, and cross-examined with logic, ‘Z’ for those mathematicians among us.
“And if that wasn’t enough, we next have Epistemology, or the study of knowledge. That’s right, would-be-Browns. Here you get to pick apart the why behind all those books you read. What is knowledge? How much is too much? What are the human limits? What can be gained from the knowledge other than ‘hey! I copied 250 pages worth of this text book and boy is my arm tired!’? What effect, other than intelligence and trivia, does knowledge cause to humans? Is knowledge the same as power?”
“Logic, or the study of logic, is mainly a White Ajah branch. Followers of this branch ask questions like “Is logic objective? Who may determine what is logical? Does that not make logic subjective? Can it be both, yet neither at the same time?
“Metaphysics is the study of being. What is reality? Is it all relative? Is it possible that this reality is only a reflection of another? Closely related is Ontology, or the study of specific being. What is human, and why is it human? What separates us from other creatures? Are we better than other creatures or just as ‘Good’ or ‘Bad?’ Is human nature or nurture more of a strong point within society?”
Sydias paused, letting the students take all of this in. “I know I’ve given you all quite a bit of information today. However, I don’t expect you all to memorize these points. I do, however, expect you to walk away with an understanding of these points. Why is the White Ajah valid? Why is it important for you, even if you do not choose this Ajah? If you were to become a White, what concentration would you follow? If you are a WiT that may end up Bonding a White, what concentration would you prefer to Bond into? Answer me these questions, and then I will ask you a personalized question based on your answer. Answer that question, and then you will receive a passing grade for this class.”
Green Lesson
Jaem waited at the front of the class for everyone to get ready. He hoped that what he had prepared would be good enough, as he had completely forgotten about this class until about three days before, and therefore had spent every last minute of his free time searching through books in the Library. When all the Novices and Soldiers were ready, he cleared his throat and began.
"Typically called the Battle Ajah, the Green Ajah stands ready to fight against the Dark One and his followers. The Green Ajah is also the Grey Tower's counter to Dreadlords, who are channelers that have openly gone over to the Shadow. The Greens also are the only Ajah who bond more than one Warder."
Hoping he was doing OK so far, Jaem continued.
"The Green Ajah was born during the Trolloc Wars and has continued to fight the shadow since then, and ready itself for Tarmon Gai'don. The Green continues to be one of the most successful Ajahs. For example, here at the Grey Tower three out of seven Amyrlins, two out of eight Keepers and four out of eight Mistress of Novices have been Green.
"Today, most members of the Green Ajah are out of the Tower regularly on travels to different places, often towards the Blight. These trips can be their own quests, as advisors or as part of a Grey Tower Mission.
"There are four main ways the Green Ajah prepares for the Last Battle. The first is learning the weaves needed for battle, such as Lightning and Fireballs," as Jaem said this he wove the weaves for a fireball, and one appeared in the air in front of him, before he let it disappear again. "The second way the Greens prepare is by training with a weapon, for when channeling is either impossible, such as in an Ogier Stedding, or when it is too risky, such as when hunting for the Black Ajah."
"The Third way, is learning to command troops, a skill that many members of the Green Ajah currently use. Some even own their own forts and garrisons, such as the Citadel in the Borderlands. The Fourth and Final way is simply trying to deny the Dark One of resources he could use at The Last Battle.
"Now, I want you to all think of what those resources could be, and ways which this could be achieved. I also want you to think of how you would serve the Green Ajah and any other questions you might have"
Jaem sat down at the front of the class, drumming his fingers on his sword and waited for answers.
Blue Lesson
Having been given the right to teach the Blue side of the Ajah class Riven sits behind his desk with pride. Having brought fresh blueberry pies and a strange blue juice, set on a table with many blue plates and transparent blue glasses, he watches the students walk in. Some he knew, some not. All ranging from children to young adults to older, he waits until all are seated.
Weaving a simple voice amplification Riven stands up and says “Welcome to the Blue Ajah class, before we begin feel free to help yourself to the treats the Blue Ajah has sent for you, but once we begin please stay seated unless told otherwise.” Smiling he ads ”I highly recommend the pie, even the Amyrlin enjoys it. For the record the Mother was raised from the Blue. My name is Riven Trimak and I am the chosen representative from the Blue for this class, which I feel is a very big honor.” He finishes in slightly visible awe.
“This is the Ajah of Justice, of Causes, as varied as those causes are. The Blue are everywhere, always in the middle of the world’s most important events. Rumor has it that the White Towers Blue Ajah is raising an army to take over that tower since they were turned against.”
“As I said there are many individual causes, mine is for children’s rights, and once I am given the opportunity to wear the Blue cord you will see where this cause will take some of us.” Riven simply states.
“The Blue has had many raised to higher places, as I said the Mother is from the blue, so is the Father. The Blue has had several raised to Mistress of Novices also, and not to mention Masters of Soldiers.”
Shuffling through some papers Riven tells the class “I want you to one by one stand up, introduce yourselves and tell me where the Justice Ajah stands in your life, what you know it has done and what you think it may mean to the world in the future. Remember there are no right or wrong answers, and feel free to ask questions”.
As an after though Riven adds “Also if interested we can have a private discussion later on in reguards to what we have spoken about in class.
