Lesson 1: Eavesdropping
Crysthia Sedai sat behind a desk facing an empty classroom. Her male counterpart Tom was leaning against a back wall. Why did I tell Miliane Sedai that I would take over this class! And why do I have to be stuck working with that arrogant Asha'Man just because Miliane fancied him! Crysthia thought bitterly as a few students entered the classroom. This was her class and she would be running the show. Tom was merely there to mimic her weaves so that the Soldiers and Dedicated could see them.
Crysthia waited until everyone had arrived before standing and moving to the center of the classroom. Tom took his cue and moved to stand beside her. “Welcome everyone to Tricks with the One Power. I am Crysthia Sedai, Keeper of the Chronicles and this,” Crysthia said gesturing to Tom, “is Tom Asha'Man. Tom will be demonstrating for the Soldiers and Dedicated, as they cannot see my weaves. Tom will also handle the grading for the Soldiers and Dedicated, as I cannot see theirs. Novices and Accepted will watch my weaves and be graded by me of course.”
“Now with introductions out of the way, our lesson plan for this class is as follows: Eavesdropping, Voice Amplification, Warming Your Surroundings, Making Light, and finally Cleaning Up. Today we will cover eavesdropping. This is a very important skill to learn, especially if you plan to do a lot of out of tower business. Negotiations can often go much better if you have inside information that you may have ‘overheard.’ There are many other uses as well. But for now lets just learn how rather than why.”
Crysthia embraced the source and knew that Tom was doing the same. “You will use Spirit and Air for this weave.” Crysthia said as she first channeled a thin line of Spirit, and then added a little Air to it so that it somewhat resembled a braid, with two parts Spirit and one of Air, but not quite a braid. “Then you will direct your weave to where you wish to hear. There is a class going on in the classroom across from us and I have gotten permission from the teacher to eavesdrop on them.” Crysthia explained as she directed her weave towards the other classroom and under the door. She assumed Tom had done likewise.
“Now I want you all to try it. Tom and I will monitor your weaves, just let us know when you can hear something.” Crysthia finished and began moving around the classroom as novices and accepted began weaving.
Lesson 2: Voice Amplification
Crysthia walked into the classroom to find Tom already there, leaning against a wall as usual. The first class had gone relatively well. Tom had done exactly as he was supposed to. She hoped it would stay that way the rest of the week. Today they would be teaching voice amplification. I probably should have brought my earmuffs. Crysthia thought to herself as students began arriving.
“Welcome back everyone.” She said as the classroom had filled with students. “Today we will be learning Voice Amplification. For those of you who have taken the Illusion class this lesson may look familiar. To begin we will channel a mix of Air and fire, which you will form into a funnel shape. Then place the weave in front of your mouth and speak normally into it.” Crysthia demonstrated the weave placing the funnel in front of her mouth. “Now I would like each of you to try it. The size of the funnel will determine how loud your voice will get.” Crysthia finished letting her weave drop. “Pease remember that we don’t need to be heard on the other side of the tower.” Tom said as he demonstrated for the Soldiers and Dedicated.
Lesson 3: Warming Your Surroundings
Crysthia entered the classroom to find it exactly as she expected it to be, empty and cold. Tom had not arrived yet, which she was thankful for. She sat at the desk to prepare herself for today’s lesson. A few minutes later Tom arrived. He gave her a nod and went to his favorite leaning spot against the wall. Shortly thereafter students began arriving.
“Welcome back everyone. In case you haven’t noticed it is a little chilly in here today. We are going to learn how to warm the room up. What I want everyone to do is stand and separate yourselves so that you all have a little space. We are each going to warm up just our own areas. Now everyone watch me and Tom closely as we demonstrate the weave.” Crysthia said as she embraced Saidar.
She began channeling strands of Air and Fire carefully, creating something like a small box on the floor. Tom did the same for his section. “You will channel Air and Fire together but be very careful how much of each you put in. You can adjust the amounts you put in depending on how warm or cool you want to make the room. But if you put in too much air you might freeze and if you put too much fire you could burn yourself. You can make the area as large as you want, but if you make it too big it may not work as well as you want it to.” Crysthia smiled as she felt the warmth of her weave creep into her section. “Now I want everyone to try and Tom and I will check on your progress."
Lesson 4: Making Light
Crysthia watched as the students filed in for class. Tom had not yet arrived and she was getting annoyed. She waited a few more minutes and then decided it was time to start the class. “Welcome everyone. Today we will be learning how to make light. I apologize to you soldiers and dedicated but Tom is not here yet. Hopefully he will be here before we start channeling. The first thing we need to do is make it darker in here.” Crysthia said as she began channeling the curtains shut around the room, and she extinguished a few of the lights as well until it was relatively dim. As soon as she was finished Tom came in.
Tom mumbled an apology as he took his place next to her to begin the demonstration. “Ok everyone watch closely. This weave will require Air and Fire.” Crysthia said as she held her hand out and began channeling the threads into the shape of a ball. Soon it appeared as if she had a glowing ball resting just above her hand. “You can make the ball as small or as big as you like, but remember larger balls of light require more of the one power to create. Now I would like all of you to try the weave."
Lesson 5: Cleaning Up
Crysthia walked into the classroom carrying a box of rusty daggers. She looked around for Tom who was supposed to have brought in some wet towels for today’s lesson. He had placed the box of wet towels on her desk and he was leaning against his favorite spot on the wall. She set the box of daggers down next to the towels and sat down to wait for the students to arrive.
Once everyone had taken their seats Crysthia stood and took out a dagger from the box. “Welcome everyone. Today we’ll be learning how to do a little cleanup. You are going to learn how to remove rust from metal, and how to dry cloth that is wet. We shall start with the rust. You will be using Earth this time.” Crysthia began weaving the strands of earth into a circle. She directed the weave over the dagger and soon the rust was gone and the dagger had a nice polished look to it. Tom had done the same with his and he was holding it up for everyone to see.
“Ok, now to dry cloth. I have here some wet towels which we are going to practice on.” Crysthia said as she removed one from the box. “You will be weaving Water.” She said as she began channeling a thin thread of Water. She used the thread to absorb the water from the towel and soon found it to be quite dry. “For those weak in water, this weave may take some time. Also if you dry to quickly you could end up with wrinkles in the fabric. Now I want everyone to take a dagger and a towel and practice. Once you have a polished dagger and a dry towel bring them to me for inspection."
