Lesson 1: Getting Around the Truth
Lesson 1: Getting around the truth-
An introduction to the basics of word manipulation.

Beatrice Sedai sat behind a desk in an empty classroom going over her plans for the upcoming class she would be teaching. It would be a 7-week class and she wanted to make sure she covered everything to her students understanding. But she also didn't want to go too slow so as to bore them. She had both Novices and Accepted on her Roster, as well as their male counterparts, and as this was a non-channeling class she thought some of the warders in training might be interested in taking it as well.

Beatrice looked up from her notes and noticed a few Accepted and Dedicated had arrived and were taking their seats. She looked toward the door as a few novices poked their heads in cautiously. "Everyone please come in and take your seats. Class will begin shortly." Beatrice announced standing up. She waited a few more minutes as more students arrived and then decided it was time to begin.

"Welcome to Word Manipulation. I must make it very clear to you that there will be no channeling in this classroom. This is a non-channeling class and we have a special ter'angreal in the room that works best when there is no channeling going on." Beatrice scanned her class and noticed a novice raise her hand. She nodded to the girl.

"What does this ter'angreal do?" She asked curiously. The girl might make a good candidate for Indigo. Beatrice thought as she smiled at the novice.

"I will explain that in a few moments. First I would like to give you all an overview of the class and what I will be teaching you. This class will last for a total of 7 weeks. We have 6 lessons and then a final exam. The class as you already know is Word Manipulation, we will be learning how to twist words, get around the truth, and lead people to false assumptions, without ever speaking a lie. The lessons will include learning to speak vaguely, telling only half the truth, speaking with confidence, changing the subject, and finally, the best for last, how to lie despite having sworn the oaths." Beatrice paused at this as some of the students gasped.

"Please hold your questions until the end of the class. First I will not speak of that lesson again until we reach that lesson, and only students who attend and pass the first 5 lessons will be allowed to attend the 6th. Now back to the question of the ter'angreal. We will be putting many of the lessons into practice in this classroom, and it is quite easy to tell a lie, when you are trying to get around the truth if you have no oaths constraining you. For the purposes of practice the ter'angreal we have in the room acts similar to swearing that oath, when you are in its proximity you cannot lie.

"I think that will be all the lecturing for this lesson. Now for an assignment, what I want each of you to do is think on what you will be learning in this class, then you will come up to my desk one at a time, and answer me a question without giving away all the truth, and of course without lying. Your question is what did you do today before coming to my class." Beatrice waited as the students began considering the question and then one by one began coming up to her desk.

OOC: What I want you to do is think about what your character did before class. (Meaning type it out as a thought, try putting something fun or mischievous in there) and then come up to the desk and tell me about it with as little as you can manage to say of the mischief and stuff you weren't supposed to do involved. Don't forget to add character actions, such as nervously looks around, or whatever is appropriate for your character. I would like at least a 200-word post please. Depending on how your post is worded I may either pass it as is, or do a very short RP(max of 2 posts each) with you before passing it.

Lesson 2: Vagueness
Lesson 2: Vagueness- Learn to speak vaguely. Being specific can cost you.

Beatrice entered the classroom and noticed that there were already a few students there. She smiled at them and went over to the desk to prepare herself for the days lesson. She watched as more students entered and took their seats. Some of them were talking amongst themselves. A couple of novices and a soldier were complaining about chores. One of the Accepted was complaining to a Dedicated about the novice class she was going to have to teach.

It would appear everyone has complaints today. Beatrice thought to herself as she stood to begin the class. "Welcome back everyone. Today we will be discussing Vagueness. It is always important not to be too specific when answering questions, especially if you are speaking to someone outside the tower regarding tower business. There are many ways to give a vague answer. But be careful, if you are too vague you may be asked to be more specific. Of course depending on who you are talking to you could simply tell them it's none of their business. But generally we want to put people at ease that we are not meddling in their lives, regardless of whether we are or not." Beatrice looked around at her class some of the students seemed bored.

"I couldn't help but overhear that many of you had some complaints today regarding various things. Of course as an Aes Sedai or Asha'Man you would know better than to have your complaints heard by others. But in the event something you said and some of it was overheard by the wrong person, it is important cover up what has been said very quickly. An example would be a novice complaining about an Aes Sedai's class, and that Aes Sedai overheard the complaint. The Aes Sedai might ask if the novice thought her too harsh. A good, yet vague answer for the novice to give would be 'What we are learning is very dangerous and it is important to supervise it properly.' The novice has not lied, as most likely the class content is dangerous if it is a channeling class and supervision is important. But she did not answer the question regarding harshness, nor make any indication of her complaints, or how she thought it could be done better. For your assignment I would like you to think of a complaint you made recently about something or someone, and what you may have said if it had been overheard. Remember there are many ways to handle such a situation, but as this lesson is in vagueness please make sure your responses to the eavesdropper are vague. When you are finished please bring your paper up to me so we can discuss it."

OOC: 200-words or more please.

Lesson 3: Speaking Half-truths
Lesson 3: Speaking half truths-
If you must give information, never give everything away, leave room for assumptions.

Beatrice stood at the front of the classroom and watched as her students entered the room for class. The students were relatively quiet today, she noticed. Perhaps they recall our last lesson and will be more careful about complaining where others can here. Beatrice thought with a smile.

"Welcome back everyone. Today we will discuss telling half truths, or as some may call it, lies by omission. Often times when you don't tell the whole story it can leave a lot of room for assumptions. If a person assumes the wrong thing, they may come back to you and call you a liar, even though you haven't in fact lied, you simply didn't tell them everything.

"There are many times throughout your life as an Aes Sedai or Asha'man, where you will need to use this skill, so it is important to practice and perfect it. For example, when you are out of the tower you may not want it known that you are an Aes Sedai or Asha'man, and so you will introduce yourself as someone else. Now obviously you can't say my name is Tiara when your name is Kira, but you can say you may call me Tiara. This leads the person to believe your name is Tiara, even though you didn't actually say it was. Another example, of which I'm sure some of you can relate, is regarding chores. Let's say you were asked to make your bed. Later you are asked if you made your bed. Well you may not have made it today, but you made it yesterday or sometime in the past I'm sure. So you can say yes I made my bed, without actually lying. Because you didn't say when you made the bed. However this wouldn't work if you were asked if you made your bed today, in that case I'd recommend having actually made your bed, or using another tactic such as changing the subject which we will learn in a later lesson." Beatrice paused to make sure everyone was understanding the lesson, no one appeared to be confused so she continued.

"Ok, now it's assignment time. For your assignment I would like you to tell me another example that you think falls under today's topic. When you are finished please bring your paper up to me so we can discuss it." Beatrice sat down and watched as everyone began writing.

Lesson 4: Speaking with Confidence
Lesson 4: Speaking with Confidence-
Learn to speak with confidence, if you sound unsure or nervous, people will know you aren't telling them everything.

Beatrice came running into the classroom, she was about 10 minutes late and the class was sitting there staring at her. "I..uh.. sorry I'm late.. uhh these things happen you know, I mean.. I was.. well it doesn't matter let's get class started." She said breathlessly as the class stared at her. Suddenly Beatrice broke into a smile. "Now if I started the class like that you wouldn't take today's lesson very seriously I think. Today we will be learning to speak with confidence. And I think it is necessary to start over." Beatrice said as she walked out of the classroom.

I certainly got their attention. Beatrice thought suppressing a giggle as she walked back in. "Good Morning class, apologies for my tardiness, let's get started before any more time is wasted." She said as she moved quickly up to the front of the classroom.

"Often in life you will find yourself in the middle of a discussion in which you haven't a clue what is being said. It is very important to maintain control of yourself, and speak as if you know exactly what you are saying. If you hesitate too often, or use a lot of uhm's or uh's you won't be taken seriously, and be thought of as a fool. It is also important to maintain such calm even when taken by surprise by something, or not being prepared for something, such as arriving to class late. I assume you recall the two ways in which I entered the classroom today. The first time I was out of breath, and didn't have a clue what I was saying. It may even have appeared that I had been doing something I shouldn't have been doing. The second time I was calm, collected, and said little about my obvious lateness, in favor of pressing on with the lesson today. Now for the assignment, I would like you to think of the last time you were late, or caught by surprise. Tell me how you handled yourself at the time, and then tell me what you might do and say the next time, so as to exhibit confidence. When you are finished please bring your paper up to me so we can discuss it." Beatrice smiled and sat at her desk to wait for the papers to arrive.

Lesson 5: Changing the Subject
Lesson 5: Changing the Subject
Learn how to turn things around so as to avoid answering what you do not want known.

Beatrice waited until it was time for class to start before enterring the classroom. She was dripping wet and as it wasn't raining outside this was an odd sight. She walked up to the front of the room to begin class.

"Welcome back everyone." She began as several hands shot up to ask questions. "Yes?" Beatrice called on a young novice.

"Uhm, Aes Sedai, why are you dripping wet?" She said nervously.

"I'm wet?" Beatrice said and looked at her dress somewhat absent mindedly. "Oh it would seem I am. Well now back to the lesson, today we will be learning about how to change the subject. Of course changing the subject might be a bit easier, when you are having a normal conversation, rather than walking into a classroom dripping wet. Because of the physical evidence that you are wet, the person you are speaking with will not be listening to much of what you are saying until thier curiousity on why you are wet is satisfied. So in order to continue, I will satisfy your curiousity and tell you that I am wet simply as an object lesson for this mornings class, and now that it is over, if you will excuse me while I dry off." Beatrice smiled and walked out of the classroom so that she was far enough away from the ter'angreal to channel. Quickly she dried herself off and walked back into the classroom.

"Now then, let's continue. When you are speaking with someone who asks a question you do not wish to answer, a good way to avoid it is to change the subject. But you must do so seamlessly, and speak as if what you are bringing up is much more important than the question you were asked. It is very important to speak confidently when attempting to change the subject, so I hope you all remember the last lesson. Now for today's assignment, I am going to call you up one by one and we are going to have a little conversation. I am going to attempt to press you for information that you do not want me to know, and you will try to change the subject." Beatrice seated herself at her desk and called the first student up to her.

OOC: Make a short post, of approx 100 words or more, in your post include a few thoughts of things you may not want Beatrice Sedai to know, perhaps you thought she looked ridiculous coming into the classroom all wet, or perhaps you don't like her class at all and regret taking it, or it could be something completely unrelated, this is to give me a hand in rping what to ask you, end the post at Beatrice's desk and we'll go from there. This will be a short RP (2-3 posts per person)

Lesson 6: Lying Despite the Oaths
Lesson 6: Lying despite the Oaths-
Yes this can be done, and in this lesson you will find out how.

Beatrice walked down the halls toward her classroom. She was about five minutes late, but she was in no hurry, as she was being purposely late. She walked into the classroom, and her students looked at her eagerly. She knew many of them had been waiting for this lesson.

"I apologize for my tardiness, it is good that you are all here and ready for the lesson. Let's begin shall we?" She asked as she walked to the front of the room. "Now then, has anyone yet puzzled out just how an Aes Sedai and Asha'Man can lie despite having sworn the Oaths?" A few hands shot up. "What I would like you all to do is to write down how you think they can lie despite having sworn on the Oath Rod. Once all of the papers have been placed on my desk I will give you the answers." Beatrice watched as the students began writing.

I wonder what they will come up with. She thought as she took a seat at the desk, to plan the exam for next week. Slowly papers began accumulating on her desk. Beatrice looked up as the last soldier was placing his paper on the desk. Beatrice stood up, smiling.
"Alright everyone. Hopefully you had at least one right answer on there, but don't worry if you didn't as much of this is not common knowledge. One of the easiest ways for an Aes Sedai to lie is to have her warder do it for her. Provided of course she has a warder. But that's not really her lying is it? Another way would be to remove the Oaths, using the same Oath Rod that had been sworn upon. I do not recommend this as it is quite painful, and quite illegal so long as you call yourself Aes Sedai or Asha'Man, and the Oath Rod is quite difficult to get your hands on unless you are swearing upon it at your raising. Those Aes Sedai and Asha'Man who have been stilled or gentled and then healed have also been removed of their oaths, and can lie until they re-swear their Oaths. Again this is very much not recommended. But perhaps the easiest way is simply to not know that you are lying. If you believe something to be true, you can speak it regardless of whether it is or not. Now for your assignment, I would like for you to write about a time when you thought you knew something to be a fact, and found out later that it wasn't. Leave the papers on the desk when you are finished and then you may go. Don't forget next week is the exam." Beatrice smiled and sat back down to read the earlier assignment.

OOC: Please make your post 200 words, be sure to include what you wrote down regarding how an Aes Sedai or Asha'Man can lie.

Final Exam!
Final Exam: A quick test to ensure you have fully understood the class.

Beatrice stood in the far corner of the classroom watching as the students filed in for their exam. "Attention everyone. For the exam I'm going to ask you all to wait outside, I will bring you in one by one, and we will have a conversation. At the end of this conversation I will decide whether or not you have grasped the basic concepts of this class, and you will receive either a pass or fail. For those who fail, you will be asked to come back next week and given another try. You will be graded on how confidently you speak as well as your responses to questions. When you are called upon I want you to give me as little true information as possible without ever speaking a lie. That means if I ask your name, try finding a way to tell me a different name that what I know you by. Now everyone please exit the room, and wait to be called.

OOC: This will be a short RP, of approximately 2-3 posts each. I expect posts to be a minimum of 100 words. When you are called upon Beatrice will say "Welcome to your final exam, may I have your name please?"
