General Role-Playing Guidelines
written by Melabrid Asha'man
Actually,
there aren't many of these-the fun part of RPing is that you can generally
be who you like, and do what you will. The best way to learn is really
to pick it up as you go along, but here are a few general points...
- Try
to be realistic in terms of your own abilities, and realistic in terms of the limits of Robert Jordan's world.
- It's
good to leave roleplaying posts open-ended, so other people can join
in if they want.
- It's
not good manners to put words into other people's mouths- you should
post for your character only, and let other people decide how their
character will react. What you do with your character is, of course,
entirely up to you.
- You should not harm other people's characters without their OOC permission. Such RPs are always interesting, but make sure everyone agrees before doing anything to other characters.
- Never confuse OOC and IC! Characters here will not always like each other, but that does not mean their players can't get on fine. Your characters are budding Aes Sedai and Asha'man: remember all the plotting, behind-the-scenes manipulation and carefully worded snubs and gestures. Use all these on each other IC to create a realistically complex environment, but never confuse this with OOC!
OOC, everyone should try to get on as much as possible. Friendships OOC are the best environment for the most challenging character conflicts IC, and likewise, nothing sours RP as much as two OOC enemies trying to get level and score points through their characters.
- Write
your roleplay posts in whatever form you like. Most people write in
the past tense, but some write in the present. Most people write in
the third person, but some write in the first, and the occasional
post directed at someone in particular is even in the second person....you
do know what I'm talking about, don't you?...Good, just checking.
Anyway, style is entirely up to you.
- Don't
worry about times and places. There's nothing to stop you being involved
in lots of RPs at the same time, even if they're all in different
places. Everyone bends space and time here, so don't let it bother
you.
- Remember
that IRL time is different from RP time. Give people plenty of time
to respond to a post, and remember that short action RPs which would
be over in seconds IC can take days IRL.
- Don't
be afraid to join in other people's roleplays- you'll find that everyone
in the Tower is willing to accept other people in their roleplays.
- Be willing
to accept other people in your roleplays.
- If you're
bored, start a new RP thread! The Day-to-Day board is a good place
for short activities, and if you want to organise a major story, you
can set up your own Roleplay on a board of its own.
- The
possibilities are endless! Follow these guidelines, but otherwise, do as ye will! If you feel another person is roleplaying in a highly unrealistic, damaging or offensive way, you should report this to the admin.
